GREEN RIBBON OF DEATH

$

I am running windows 8 pro and every since I install the OS the one issue I have constantly had is the so called “GREEN RIBBON OF DEATH”. When I open the file explorer (windows explorer) like my computer, the drives and folders will not load completely but will continue to load with the green bar on the address bar continuously loading. This is so frustrating.

I have heard of this problem with windows vista and some windows 7 but I have never experienced it for all the years I used vista and windows 7. Unfortunately, ever since I install windows 8, this problem will not go away. It happens so often and restarting explorer.exe does not fix it. I will have to restart my computer for it me to browse my drives and folders using file explorer and after awhile the GREEN RIBBON OF DEATH will start happening again.

I have done a complete fresh install with very few of my software installed on the OS but I still have this problem.

Is anyone else having this problem with windows 8 and if so, it there any help out there.

Windows 8.1 takes a long time to start

When I first start Windows 8.1 professional, it boots very quickly to the lock screen (I have it on an SSD, so it should). However, the network icon in the lower left corner has a yellow exclamation point (or something like that) on it which takes 30 seconds to clear. Following this, when I go to the login screen and enter my PIN, it takes another 30 seconds or so before the spinning wheel appears and I am taken to the Windows start screen.

I am connected to the internet by an Ethernet connection (wireless is not available on my desktop). I have set it up as a static IP address, both in Windows and in my router. I did this because I want to connect remotely using a batch file and if I don't, I find that the connection fails because it cannot find the IP address and connect using my credentials (I have several users in my household, a couple of home connect without a static IP address, so at times, they would be assigned my IP address if my PC is not already connected).

Any idea why this is occurring? Would it be better if I only assign the static IP address on one end (either Windows or the router)?

Service Host (svchost.exe) Using 99% CPU

Hey guys-

I know this question has been asked for other Windows OS's, but none of their fixes apply on Windows 8.

When I log in, everything is fine, everything is very smooth and even faster than when I used Windows 7, but after a few minutes my CPU becomes locked at ~99%, mostly because of svchost.

As it appears on Task Manager, the process is Service Host (No Impersonation). The sub-processes are Function Discovery Resource Publication, SSDP Recovery, Time Broker, and UPnP Device Host. I tried several fixes that worked in XP or 7, but they either can't be used in 8 or detect nothing is wrong.

This is the only thing that makes me dislike 8 so far, a fix would be fantastic.

Why is it that when I responded to a Microsoft upgrade to 8.1 all my system went into meltdown, my passwords were all ......up and then a few days later microsoft blocked my Skype system with a switch request for a new password to Skype which I couldn't get rid of or bypass, so when I did switch I now can't access my account or retrieve my contacts without deleting my Skype account!! I am so fed up with Microsoft and the continual bombardment of rubbish and unwanted/unrequired interference which is forced down my gullet and which then, causes me so many problems with access and changed password details that make me want to throw all my equipment out of the windows (excuse the pun)!!!

Slow performance with Visual Studio 2012 on Windows 8.1 Virtual Machine

$

Hi allJ

I’m not sure if here is the right place for my post, if not, please move it J

I’ll describe the whole story:

We have VDI infrastructure with Win 8.1 Ent x64 VMs. They are used by developers, so we want from them to have the maximum performance.

We made tests on one of them to compile a project with VS2012 with different configurations:

-------

Host Config:

2x E5-2670, 128 GB , FC SAN + Win 2012 DC

------

VM config:

8 vCPU Cores

8GB Dynamic Ram

C: and D: volumes on same CSV volume

Win 8.1 Ent. X64 with VS 2012

------

  1. Normal configuration (with other machines on host and shared volume for its VHDs) – 7:15 min
  2. Alone on volume – 7:10 min
  3. With static memory – 7:10 min
  4. Alone on Host – 6:50 min
  5. Disabled AV – 5:50 min (this helped the most)
  6. Added additional 8 vCPU – 5:47
  7. Disabled win services which are not needed– 5:50

On Physical machine (i7-2600 + 8 GB RAM) the project is compiled for 3:20min

It’s strange that the Visual Studio is utilizing only about 12-16 % of the CPU. When we try with different number of vCPU:

-         2 vCPU the CPU utilization is  50-55%.

-         4 vCPU the CPU utilization is  30-35%.

-         8 vCPU the CPU utilization is  12-16%.

-         16 vCPU the CPU utilization is 8-10%

Below is a screenshot from performance monitor running during the Build of the VS project.

The question is why the VS and VM are not using the whole power of the assigned vCPU, but only using 12-17% (for 8 vCPU)?

Is there a way to improve something more to achieve better compile times ?

Regards,

Georgi

Weird delay in any action in Metro

$

I've reinstalled Windows couple of days ago and now I'm experiencing some weird problems. It did not happen before reinstall.

I've installed all the drivers, updated system from windows Win 8.1 x64 to Update 1.

So what happens is, when in Metro, any action I try to do has a weird no-response time. I start typing for instance to trigger search function, which I use quite often, and nothing happens. Then a couple of seconds pass, text that I typed isn't executed and then I have to type it all over again.

Same goes for trying to open any app/do anything. Weird delay and then I can use metro normally. Everything looks alright, just have a delay for the first action I do when I open up metro. It's getting quite annoying now. I have installed all the latest updates from Windows. Also, I'm not sure when this started happening because I've updated to Update 1 right away.

Any idea what might cause this? I've looked up event logs to look for errors, but nothing I can find that might be regarding this issue...

Thank you

Windows 8.1 gradually slows down after hours. Speed returns normal if restart "explorer.exe".

I have Windows 8.1 Pro (x64) installed on Alienware M17x. The slowdown mostly appears as slow response in the situation such as open a folder/window, open/close/switch tabs in IE, drag window, and there's also cursor lag. It gradually slows down after system boot, noticeable after 3-4 hours, really slow after 8-9 hours.

I have thought about many possible processes which can cause this issue, and then I found out that it's caused by "explorer.exe". If I kill "explorer.exe", the speed suddenly becomes normal. Then, I restart explorer.exe again, it stays normal, and then it still gradually slows down again after hours.

I have checked driver or software compatibility. Also, CPU usage and Disk usage is normal.

Please give some advises, reasoning, or solutions.

File copy pianfully slow between computers

Hi

I have recently bought a Win8.1 machine. I am using my wi-fi connection (450mbps) to copy files from my old Win7 PC to the Win8.1 PC. However, when I try to copy large files (avi's etc) the copy speed drops from c. 20MBps to 300-500k per second. The Win7 PC is connected via a CAT5e cable.

I have tried disabling all security software, restarted my router (to which both PC's are connected) to no avail.

I copy my iTunes library (600GB) in about 8 hours. When I select a 17GB avi it says it will take more than a day and the speed drops to half a MB or less. Is there anything I can do to fix this issue, please. Copying large files when using WinXP was a breeze!

Questions about using Microsoft system image backup that have come up for me.

$
0
0

I have some observations and some questions here and there through making a new system image for windows 8.1 pro, so please bear with me for a moment.

The system image was invaluable for me in upgrading to windows 8 from 7  and then again from 8 to 8.1.  .. while having upgraded from a normal HDD to  a 128 GB (119GB) OCZ Vertex 4 SSD.

At the time, windows said that the system image would take up to 65 GB ...and it did take up exactly that.  However, more recently  windows has taken up  almost twice the amount of space that is said the max would be.  In the latest case just now...  windows said it would need up to 53 GB  but upon completion the system image file is 96 GB.  From the responses I have found here and elsewhere on the internet, I have not found a reason for this.  Free space is not included.

The user files I moved to a third hard drive like pictures..documents and so on (and are still linked to C)  total only 5 GB more and during the backup process this hard drive was not read from or written too.  I also shrank down my C drive files by about 7 GB this time ...and that reduction rouphly matches the final outcome vs my last image file I tried.   So, I can see no reason why the system image is 2x larger than windows said it would be.   can anyone please tell me why this is so?  Is the backup reliable?

Also another related question. ..  The event viewer  displayed this error 4x at the start of the backup and then 1 more time at the end ..

event 513 CAP12

Cryptographic Services failed while processing the OnIdentity() call in the System Writer Object.

Details:

AddLegacyDriverFiles: Unable to back up image of binary Microsoft Link-Layer Discovery Protocol.

System Error:

Access is denied.

Macrium reflect (briefly looked here while trying to figure out my backup issues) recommends that a user make the following permission changes to the windows directory to get rid of the error message.

"

This message is caused by the Windows Shadow Copy System Writer. If the permissions of the COM catalog folder are incorrect, this writer may not work properly.
Solution The Shadow Copy System Writer is not used by Reflect, and so this error does not affect the backup process. However, if you want to stop the error message from appearing, follow the following steps.
  1. Navigate to your C:\Windows folder within Windows Explorer.
  2. Right click on the folder Registration. Click on Properties, and go to theSecurity tab.
  3. Click the Advanced button. If the User Account Control dialog box appears, clickContinue.
  4. In the following dialog, make sure that the following permissions are set:
    • The Administrators group has Full Control over This folder and files.
    • The Everyone group has List folder/read data, Read attributes,Read extended attributes, and read permissions forThis folder and files.
    • The SYSTEM account has Full Control over This folder and files.
  5. Click OK.
    "

My question is would this compromise windows security too much or  would this be an ok thing to do?   I do get this error at other times ...  and I was also thinking since the event viewer says I do not have admin permissions to install the downloaded updates in the windows store, maybe these changes would fix that too.  What do you guys think?

---------------------------------------------

Also an observation .. the backup seemed to stall out at 95% .. the back up process was taking no cpu power or memory. so I quit.

I then turned off the antivirus and this time noted that the backup process was using no cpu or memory (well 2 mb) to start with!  So this time I decided to let it go and see  if it was verifying in that final 5% of time left... as I did see the destination HDD reading the first time.  So as soon as the backup c: line disappears on the progress meter it does indeed switch from writing to reading ...and then takes another 20 min to complete successfully (the writing process took 40 min.)  Thus, I think there should have been some notification that verification was going on or a person, like me, might think the task had frozen. :)

Thankyou for your attention   and reading all this if you made it this far. hehe    Have a nice day :))

Windows 8 automatically restarted on my laptop with my camera still attached. Once it had finished, my files were corrupted on my camera and could not be opened.

I am furious with automatic updates as it has wiped all my honeymoon media. My camera now does not respond to my laptop when that SD card is in

any ideas on how i can resolve this to  get my videos and pic back? Has that update affect my sd card?

Hi, my RAM usage on Windows 8 64bit is higher than usual. It is at around 2.4GB with no apps running.

At startup the RAM is normally at around 1.4GB and Non paged Pool is around 150 MB. After a few minutes on idle, the Non Paged Pool goes upto 1.1GB, and then the RAM usage goes upto 2.4GB. Can someone please help?

Why does Microsoft .NET ngen/ngentask sometimes continuously cycle?

$

Occasionally I notice that Microsoft's .NET 4.0 framework ngen is continuously cycling on my Windows 8 x64 system. It happens sporadically and in short bursts. I captured it in Process Monitor, here's a picture:

I have read about ngen here and it seems very useful. But is what I'm experiencing normal behavior? I pay close attention to what processes are running and the resources they are using, so it's possible I could be making something out of nothing here. Thanks.

Resizing application windows started from Start Screen

$

Hi

For the applications that are already loaded onto the Start Screen how can you resize them once they are started.

For example, I launched Calculator from the Start Screen because I wanted to tally some numbers in another application that I had started from my Desktop. However, Calculator occupies the entire screen. The only resizing options are to split left or right but the Start Screen is visible in the space vacated and not the original application containing the numbers.

I can add a shortcut to the Desktop for calc.exe, but have noticed this behaviour for all the applications on the Start Screen. I don't see how this is useful because I need to work with several windows open at the same time (which is what Windows xxx is all about).

Can anyone help me with this, please?

Thanks

Computer Waking Up at Night

$

Hi there,
Have a problem with the desktop waking up at least once every 10 days or so.
Checked all the necessary problem areas: powercfg /devicequery wake_armed returns NONE.
Wake computer options are all off for Scheduled Maintenance, Power/Multimedia, Ethernet.

Noticed the WindowsUpdate entry under Task Scheduler has "Wake the computer to run this task" checked.
Unchecking  and OK (even without unchecking) on the properties dialog box will stall for a few seconds. Then there is an alert "task scheduler service is not available." This was restarted through the scheduler by (successfully) changing the conditions for that on the TaskScheduler entry.
I suspect that Windows Update is waking the computer but the above doesn't constitute sufficient proof. Nevertheless, the irksome side-effect is that the OS doesn't appear to employ it's configured power saver options after being woken. So it can stay on for hours (or days) without turning off. (Bear in mind the Power Saver conditions work when the computer is manually started.)
Any suggestions?
