Windows 8 x64 Latency issues

$

Recently been getting significant latency issues on my desktop after roughly a day/two of use (hibernating at night). This causes audio stuttering and static. Issue seems to be caused by maybe ndis, usbport or tcipip?

Seems to occur mostly when refreshing the browser (chrome or firefox) and with other programs using internet. In latencymon every refresh on the browser results in a fault.

Created an interrupt file through xperf, I think this link should work.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/f4gr4xz7e9rpk68/DPC_Interrupt%20part%202.rar?dl=0

Part 2 is when the issue is starting to show

Been happening for a few weeks now. Restarting solves the problem but only for a day or two.

When I use the search box in the side bar then it works as normal. But when I press enter, and then goes to the search app. Then it searching for 5 minutes then it says: The search got maximum time limit. Try again. And it happens every time when I search in the search app in my windows 8.1. What should I do?

I'm seeing these errors over and over constantly every 5 to 20 minutes.. Doesn't really seem to affect anything - that is noticeable anyhow - but it concerns me.    I've run the SFC and DISM popular fix all's,  some of the download diagcabs, apps, updates, account -  and removed a few apps that showed any kind of warning or error or misbehaviors .    Lenovo i3 Laptop, not loaded with much extra programs or apps.

How to trace source of latency spikes

$

The problem started as sound issues - pops and clicks.  Capturing some sound and analyzing it in a sound editor showed characteristic buffer underrun problems.  LatencyMon showed dxgkrnl.sys was responsible for the latency, but did not give enough detail to diagnose further.  More research, and I downloaded and ran windows performance analyzer.  It gave a lot more data, but is still not enough to diagnose the source of the problem.

Every second, on the second, I get a 15-16ms lag spike in dxgkrnl.sys when running a game.  There are also some random-ish spikes between these, but the periodic ones account for 80%.  This results in problems, most notably, sound glitches.  I work freelance in the game industry and capture footage, so I need everything to be perfect.  Clients will not accept crackly sound.

My system:

Asus Rampage IV Extreme, Black Edition

32 GB ram

i7-4930X

no overclocking

various drives (both platter and ssd), input devices (mouse, trackball, keyboards, xbox 360 controller, etc)

dual monitors - one Dell 3007WFP DVI, one Samsung 46" HDMI

AMD/ATI R9 295X2 - various driver versions were tested - no change - currently running the latest drivers

windows 8.1 x64 - clean install - with all patches

The problem seems to be related to issues with monitor refresh rate.  When I run the game in full screen mode, the Samsung goes to 59.94fps, which is correct.  This is the format required by clients as it is broadcast standard.  Normally, it is at 60fps.  I cannot set the Dell to 59.94.  Trying only produces a black screen (no sync), so it has to stay at 60.  If I run the game in borderless window mode, so the Samsung is at 60fps, there are no latency spikes.  This is a table of my tests:

Dell at 60, Samsung at 60, at windows desktop - no latency problems

Dell at 60, Samsung at 59.94, at windows desktop - no latency problems

Dell at 60, Samsung at 59.94, in game full screen - 15ms latency spikes in dxgkrnl.sys, sound glitches

Dell at 60, Samsung at 60, in game borderless windowed - no latency problems

Dell disabled, Samsung at 59.94, in game full screen - no latency problems

Note that the Dell desktop is used to run monitoring software (framerates, CPU/GPU temperature, etc, so I do need it), but it is not used to extend the game window / screen.

Windows performance monitor shows the spikes occur in dxgkrnl.sys ISR function DpiFdoMessageInterruptRoutine and in dxgkrnl.sys DPC function DpiFdoDpcForIsr.  However, I am unable to see any further information, such as what is calling these routines, what these routines call, what is generating the interrupts to trigger these routines, etc.

How can I dig deeper and find out the underlying cause of the problem?  Does windows performance monitor have some functions I have not found that can do this, or is there another tool that does?

Thank you.

High memory usage with Windows 8.1

Since I upgraded to Windows 8.1 I'm experiencing a frustrating issue with memory. My pc has 32 gb that end up all used by a ghost process.

If I look into the task manager I cannot see any process taking so much memory. I've used Poolmon to get the tag with more bytes and diff and I've found that CMNb tag is the one with a higher difference between Allocs and Frees.

Anyone has found this issue too? I've also used RAMMap and I've learnt that if I empty current working sets the memory reduces to minimum.

It's important to note that all this happens without running any specific software in the pc. Just waiting is enough to see how system degrades until a blue screen.

Any ideas of what is this CMNb tag?

Thanks!

Why the system is very slow than before

I have two computers, One is desktop, another is laptop, but I met the problems about the performance for the two computers, from last Monday, two computers speed are very slow, after I checked the task manager, I found the service(ntoskrnl.exe) used the 60-70% CPU resource, but why the ntoskrnl.exe cause this? I also download the tools and analysised it, but it seems that no useful information, how to find the root cause?

summary all the information as below

1.Suddenly this problems happened

2. I closed the AVP (Kaspersky antivirus software), but it seems no improved for the performance

3. I have closed the Windows search service, but no change for this

4\I use the maxthon and Firefox browse , all the same thing happened.

Why is WUDFHost.exe Running For My Two External USB WD MyBook Drives?

$

Ever since I installed Windows 8.1 x64 Pro I have had a WUDFHost.exe process running.  Using Process Hacker and Process Explorer and with a little help and some registry sleuthing I have finally identified it as hosting my two external USB backup drives, G: and H:.

I have also verified, through process logs I have been capturing every night since early in 2010, that WUDFHost didNOT run as part of Windows 7 x64, even though I had these same drives plugged-in.

Given the above, my question is this:

Is it a given that WUDFHostmust run when there is an external USB disk drive present on Windows 8.1?

Or is it there because of specific settings?

Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong - in fact my system is perfectly stable.  It's just that I want to know why things run.  Ideally, if they don't need to be running, but I have some media sharing setting somewhere set wrong that correcting would cause WUDFHost not to run my system would be leaner and have more resources for my work.

Thanks in advance for any insights you may have on this.

Wanted to install KB2981965 But It's Not Applicable?

A new hotfix that may improve file system performance has been released:  KB2981965.

I would love to try it but...

My version of Ntoskrnl is not the version the article claims is required.  I'm not sure if this is because I have Win 8.1 Pro Media Center Edition, or because of a Windows Update more recent than this hotfix which updated Ntoskrnl.

Note that the article claims it will only update version 6.3.9600.17237, while I have a slightly newer one...

Any ideas?

SettingSyncHost.exe causes disk to thrash on disk-intensive system

$

I see SettingSyncHost.exe regularly churn through ~50MB of disk activity. Is this normal, and why? I am not doing anything to change 50MB of settings. (Also: how could I even have 50 MB of settings???)

It is a problem because I am doing emulation on this device: it needs pretty much an idle disk drive. (I also sometimes have problems with Windows Error Reporting, but I leave that turned off unless I actively need it.)

Dell Precision M3800 Performance Question

$

Hi Everyone,

First time posting here so excuse me for the simplicity of the question ad information that I am providing.

I have recently bought the DELL Precision M3800 Workstation

The specs are:

CPU: i7 4702HQ (2.2Ghz - 3.2Ghz)

16GB RAM

512gb mSata SSD

Win 8.1 PRO

The issue that I am having is speed. This is my first laptop with a solid state drive, and I was (possibly falsely?) expecting super fast speeds. To start with, the booting is very fast, (approx 7 seconds).

The problem is, installing, installing and launching applications.

I am currently installing Autodesk Maya 2015 and it is very slow. I have the file downloaded, so it is not the download speed, but its been going on for a good 15 minutes. This happens with all installations, Skype, AutoCAD, Photoshop etc.

If I open the task manager, It shows that the CPU is at 15% and the Disk is at 5%

None of my resources are utilised, while the programs are struggling to move progress in the installation.

It is similar with loading them. The time it takes to load up a program (installed on SSD) is the same as on my old laptop whin an i5 processor and normal HDD.

I guess my question is, is there any way to give programs more resources so they would react quicker, as the system is clearly capable of speeding things up, just the programs aren't using these resources.

Any and all ideas are welcome. If more information is required please ask.

Thanks

Display Turn Off Cannot be Adjusted

I'm running Windows 8.1 on a Surface Pro 3, and no matter how I configure the Power Settings or Display Options, the display is automatically turning off after 5 minutes without input.

I've used the options through the Charms Bar (Settings>Change PC Settings>Power & Sleep) to Change both Battery and Plugged In sleep times to "Never", and the desktop settings (Power Options>Edit Plan Settings>Advanced>Display) to set "Turn Off Display After" to "Never".

I even tried turning On the Screen Saver and setting the time to 120 minutes, in case the Blank Screen Saver was kicking in despite being disabled.

Despite all of the above, the display continues to turn off after 5 idle minutes (e.g. when I watch a YouTube video for over 5 minutes without interacting).
