Sound issues with fresh computer build

I just got my new computer built and everything seems to be working ok, except for the audio issues I've been dealing with. I am playing the audio through the HDMI on my video card. I don't plan on running it this way forever but it would be nice if I wasn't getting a stutter/clipping. I have looked for some solutions to this and have not found anything that has worked yet. The audio is cutting out with almost any source, game, streaming audio/video, videos on the HD etc. I plugged some headphones into the front panel and the audio comes through without a problem. I have not had the chance to hook up anything to the M/B audio yet.

Here is a list of the computer specs to help:

ASRock Z87 Extreme6ac LGA 1150 Intel Z87 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Intel Core i7-4770K Haswell 3.5GHz LGA 1150 84W Quad-Core

G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 16GB (4x4GB) 240-pin DDR3 SDRAM 2133 (PC3 17000)

ASUS HD7870-DC2-2GD5-V2 Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX

I loaded Windows 8.1 and the drivers for the video card. Since this is a fresh install on a brand new PC  I don't know how there could be issues with the drivers that have been installed.
